Team Effort is Best

jigsaw-146378_640St. Louis Corporate Yoga developed out of 15 years of regular yoga practice, yoga studio ownership and ongoing corporate yoga classes.  Throughout this time, as the owner of Clayton Yoga, I faced many up’s and down’s.  Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I learned early on how to take the job seriously and made every effort to make daily improvements as both a business leader and a community role model.

I attribute my success to many people who offered their supportive coaching and encouraging words to me.  I also cherish the everyday small experiences and step by step approach I went through to get to where I am now.  I remember teaching just one yoga class each week and agonizing over it.  I would spend weeks thinking about the meaning of life, and being obsessed with developing my own style of unique voice.  I could think of nothing else!

After taking hundreds of classes from many great yoga teachers, I decided it was time to begin my own yoga studio.  Yoga was an incredibly humbling experience.  I was so passionate about finding yoga and what yoga could do, I just taught purely from instinct and as much positive energy as I could gather.  After three years, fate intervened and I met Jonny Kest who would shape her yoga practice and style forever.  Mr. Kest taught me to go within and really listen to my own unique edge, quieting my mind, and be authentic.   His style is described as eccentric.

As a child prodigy of tennis, perhaps I relate to his childhood upbringing in yoga as well.   Athletes are so competitive, that even when teachers were trying to be soothing and comforting, I still picked up competition energy.  When I studied with Jonny, for the first time, I felt free to my wild, to be myself, to celebrate the tools I already had, rather than trying to perfect a pose, Jonny encouraged me really to listen to my breath.

I remember he would tell jokes, wear blue jeans and sponsor yearly national conferences which featured the best yoga teachers from around the world.  I attended a Midwest Yoga Conference every year for 8 years and traveled to his studio 800 miles away twice to study for extended period of time.   Yoga was not about following certain postures, or teachers, but rather allowing the postures to support and nurture compassion.  Yoga began to take hold into my everyday life and I wanted to expand the business further.

I began offering corporate yoga classes after one of my students in 2001 recommended that I bring yoga to her workplace at Wachovia. Now I now train other teachers to teach corporate onsite wellness yoga classes.

Clayton Yoga and St. Louis Corporate Yoga has grown now from offering just 4 yoga classes per week to 11 weekly classes.  And we plan to expand to 22 classes with the next year!

With over a decade of teaching, I have instructed over 2,000 on-site yoga classes and servicing well over 800 yoga students. My business was featured in the St. Louis Business Weekly newspaper for creating a successful business yoga niche locally. (http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/stories/2010/02/08/story13.html).

I want to continue inspiring both yoga teacher and yoga students to live their truth.   Life is challenging.  Each moment presents an opportunity to be reactive, fearful, or calm, peaceful.  The choice is up to us.  Yoga can show the way!

Please call us at 314-630-1677 to explore the possibilities of offering onsite yoga wellness programs! You are welcome to send us a message through the message box to the right side of this webpage. We will connect with you soon.

CEOs Who Believe in Yoga

freeimage-3252307-webYoga’s acceptance in the workplace depends very much on how the management thinks about of this ancient practice.  If the CEO of a company has his/her experience practicing yoga and learned to appreciate its benefits, adding yoga to the corporate wellness offers is easy.

Why do CEOs love yoga?

We found 3 great articles about how yoga changed the perspective of leaders in different industries. Please enjoy the short excerpts and if you found them interesting, please go and read the whole articles.

Yoga has deeply influenced Stanton Kawer’s (CEO and chairman of Blue Chip Marketing Worldwide) life.

“I love business. I am passionate about growing companies. Still, I can share that since I started practicing more than two years ago, yoga has profoundly influenced my life in every aspect. It has redefined my sense of self. I have changed as a husband, father, friend and leader.”

“On a personal level yoga has been instructive in helping me redefine my expectations for achievement. Perhaps the most salient lesson I’ve learned is that there are no scorecards to define success. In the yoga studio there are no winners or losers. No umpires. No victory measured against the loss of another. In yoga success emanates from within and is defined by self-mastery.”

“Yoga allows me to carry both equanimity and enthusiasm through my days. Ultimately it has allowed me to be a more effective CEO by making me a happier, healthier and more mindful human being.”

Mark Bertolini, chairman and CEO at Aetna had a very personal experience with the healing powers of yoga. After a serious skiing injury he embarked on a journey to heal his body from the damage caused.

His own experiences with nontraditional remedies lead him to start a study to understand the benefits of yoga and mindfulness at the workplace.

“To prove the effectiveness of these practices at work, Aetna collaborated with eMindful and the American Viniyoga Institute to craft a 12-week study, during which Aetna employees practiced alternative techniques to reduce stress as measured by cortisol levels and heart-rate variability.

“When employees are in the highest quintile of stress, their health care costs are $2,000 a year on average higher than the average employee,” he said. “We saw dramatic drops in stress after the program was over, and we saw a 69-minute gain in productivity of our employees over a year,” he added.

The increased productivity along with reduced health-care costs and lowered employee stress yielded an 11-to-1 return on the program’s investments, Bertolini said, which added up to a savings of about $3,000 per employees per year.

“The other part that we couldn’t measure that I think is far more important is being present in the work environment, and by being present making better decisions for the organization and those decisions depending on where you are in the company take a longer time to have an impact, and we’ll see that over time” he added.

Following the study’s success, Aetna has opened up its stress-management programs to the insurance company’s customers and their employees.

Mark Hughes (CEO of C3 Metrics) shares about his experience with practicing yoga and the 3 principles he learned in the process:

“…I was beginning a journey learning more about myself and, surprisingly, more about business than I learned at one of the top ten business schools in the country and 20 years of professional experience.

Here are three things I learned:

1). Embrace Fear to Overcome Fear

“The headstand.  It’s a pose in yoga that few novices relish.  But I envisioned it in my mind, embraced the fear of falling as real, the fear of injury as real, but temporary, and thus overcame that fear.

And with many other poses in yoga, the fear of falling, the fear of making your failure widely known in front of many people is entirely real.  But embracing that fear enables regular people to overcome great adversity in business.  It enabled Richard Branson to create a billion dollar enterprise from a basement.  It enabled Howard Schultz to go from subsidized housing to creating Starbucks.  Achieve power through fear and adversity by embracing it.”

2). Transitions Make or Break You

The tough part is transitioning from one position to that position; that is what makes or breaks you.

Again, this is true in business and in life.  Doing what you’ve been doing isn’t hard.  Transitioning from one position to the next is where failure abounds.

It’s this transition that’s a lot like business. Transitions require planning and execution with intense focus.

If you’re paying attention, planning is the easiest part.  Transitioning from planning to execution is where things make or break you.  Without intense focus, you could slip and lose sight of the end goal.

3). Soul Needs Training

The whole “Namaste” “Ooohhm” aspect of yoga freaked me out.  What I’ve learned, though, is the complete yogi – and the complete CEO – are about positive energy.

Namaste is simply a phrase meaning “the light in me honors the light in you.”  Whether you’re Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, or Hindi, when you examine the phrase Namaste, it’s really about energy.

Like nuclear power, it’s energy that can be used for good or bad.  The amount of positive energy you bring to your office, your call, your meeting, is felt.  This is embodied in your body language, your smile, your gratitude, and gestures like opening a door and saying hi.  When a baby smiles at you, you smile too.  There is no complication in that exchange.  The amount of energy and light you bring reflects on people.  And sometimes that soul energy requires training.

Office Yoga Programs Are Not Just For Corporations

architecture-22039_640Yoga offered in an office setting is usually referred to as corporate yoga. But it is not just big corporations that can take advantage of all the benefits in-house yoga classes deliver.

Many different type of organizations can benefit from inviting yoga to the workplace!

A company doesn’t have to employ hundreds of people to make adding on-site wellness programs worthwhile. Small companies with 5-10 employees can make this concept work, too!

Non-profit organizations, hospitals, hotels and government organizations can all benefit from our programs.

We offer on-site private yoga classes, small group classes and yoga classes up to 25 participants.

One of our new offers is private yoga classes at the workplace. Many busy executives don’t have the time to travel to a yoga studio after work. On the other hand, these managers have to cope with very high stress levels daily. The practice during lunch hour, before or after work might be the only opportunity for them. A private class offers privacy and sole focus on the person’s needs.

There are many different ways to finance corporate yoga programs. Your health insurance might finance the costs of such program full or at least partly. In our experience the employees who take advantage of in-house classes gladly pay a small fee per class, too.

A few months ago we ran a pilot case study program at one of our valued partner companies. Our goal was to understand what type of improvements yoga class participants enjoy after practicing for just 3 months. The results were very positive! If you would like to get a copy of the executive summary of this case study, please let us know. We are very proud of our results and would be more than happy to share it with you!

Would you like to hear what our corporate yoga students has to say about their experience with St. Louis Corporate Yoga? We have interviewed a few of our enthusiastic students and recorded these videos where they share their results: https://stlouiscorporateyoga.com/praise/

Would you like to have a peek at how our business yoga classes are running? Check out our class videos here: https://stlouiscorporateyoga.com/videos/

We are famous for our flexibility and client friendliness when we prepare an office yoga proposal for our prospects. No matter if your organization has 10 employees or 1000, we will find the best way to share yoga with everybody in the company.

Having a Spirit of Cooperation in the Workplace

12195685_sMichelle Maue, owner of Clayton Yoga began St. Louis Corporate Yoga in response to needs of her clientele seeking to reduce stress in the workplace over ten years ago!  Since that time, St. Louis Corporate Yoga has over 4 corporate yoga instructors teaching onsite wellness classes throughout St. Louis.  With over a decade of experience, St. Louis Corporate Yoga provides over 9 weekly classes in a courteous, prompt and professional manner.

Many yoga corporate clients report overall greater resiliency to challenge, increasing greater cooperation, teamwork and levels of support.  Our long standing corporate yoga programs have also shown a marked increased in improved employee morale and better communication between employee and employers.  Sometimes, we begin our yoga class with a heartfelt and sincere prayer of gratitude called the Heart Meditation by Deepak Chopra.

In this simple and powerful story or meditation, students are prompted to recall any situation at work where they feel a certain grievance toward a particular person or situation and using their imagination create space and allow their energy to shift back to the breath, lengthening in a calm way, new positive states of mind.

When we begin to take a make a more conscious effort and choose to focus on the positive side to our circumstance; we slowly can make the shift.  We can very often learn from resistance how to transform our own mindset.  The journey from resentment to gratitude is very productive to our energy, health and mental well being.

When we live from a place of appreciation even for the setbacks, we and allow the healing life force to move through us.  Sometimes the greatest of mistakes, can often later become the greatest stepping stones to our success!  The following is a written copy of this exact meditation for you to enjoy…

[box]Heart Meditation by Deepak Chopra
Experience gratitude in your heart by considering all the things in your life for which you are grateful. Think about all the people in your life you love and the people who share their love with you. Spend a few minutes reviewing the gifts in your life for which you are appreciative.

Keeping your awareness in your heart, let go of all grievances, resentments and regrets. Repeat, every decision I make is a choice between a grievance and a miracle, I relinquish all regrets and grievances and choose the miracle (Repeat 3x)

Think of anyone that you may be holding a grudge or resentment against. Visualize them in your awareness and practice forgiveness, recognizing that everyone is doing their best from their state of consciousness. Have the intention to forgive others and yourself from any actions that have resulted from pain.

Having let go of resentments, grievances and regrets and having embraced forgiveness, bring your attention back to your breathing.[/box]

It’s great to have a healthy body, but the rewards of creating a healthy attitude and appreciative spirit is far greater.  When we release our judgement, we set ourself free!  We become more compassionate with the complexities of the working world and find things in our coworkers that have allowed us to do things we never could achieve alone.  As one yoga corporate yoga client said, “yoga classes have made me more aware of just how interdependent we all really are”.

Key Benefits of Corporate Yoga Programs

Walter Jones TestimonialSt. Louis Corporate Yoga creates key benefits in our yoga wellness onsite program throughout greater St. Louis.

What clients say from taking just a few yoga classes is a dramatic increase in higher levels of energy.   Even greater than coffee, which offers just a short 2-3 hour buzz; yoga by contrast, offers clients find sustained levels of higher energy throughout the day.

Those who practice yoga also experience more confidence in their own health and rely less and less on drugs, medication and office visits to treat in many cases stress related issues, like the common cold, indigestion or chronic headaches.  Lower healthcare visits equal lower health insurance premiums reducing more costs for corporate company owners.

Lastly, a very powerful benefit we found is the overall better feelings of community and cooperative support with their work colleagues.

Overall feedback from corporate clients report that although work challenges continue, practicing yoga increases cooperation, teamwork and greater levels for compassion for company coworkers.

Walter Jones states “As I was getting older, I wanted to do something, to improve my joints, flexibility and my strength, improve my health. With corporate yoga classes, I can come in the middle of the day, renew myself in the middle of the workweek. I love it. Changes I have noticed have been to improve flexibility and I find that I get a lot less stressful about things. I tend to feel that things will work themselves out if I don’t panic. I just think the best thing you can do for yourself is yoga in terms of improving your health, having a great outlook and overall tone body and muscle mass.”

Hear more about what Walter Jones has to say about St. Louis Corporate Video in this video testimonial:

Paula Teabeau says “I have always wanted to try yoga. I have seen it on TV. I have a very stressful job and wanted to also practice something where I could burn calories and also something calm for my mind. The camaraderie for my employees makes it enjoyable and it’s offered two times a week. Overall, it is a wonderful class.  Overall, I am less stressed, realized that a lot of my muscles have relaxed more, more ambidextrous, I am a different person, I have a different outlook, makes my day go faster, and helping me physically, mentally, and much better job performance. It gives you a different feeling about yourself and I would definitely recommend it”.

Getting Started With Corporate Yoga

in class 2Are you interested in offering on site yoga classes at your company or organization? In this article we share the most important questions you need to ask in order to create the perfect program for your employees.

How does yoga fit with your company’s HR strategy?

  • Why would you like to begin a corporate yoga program? What is your organization’s vision of a yoga program? How does it fit into the company’s employee benefits program?
  • Why yoga? What benefits will yoga provide compared to other wellness program?
  • How about the acceptance of yoga among your employees? Is yoga a welcome addition, a valuable offer for them?

Corporate yoga integration into the workday:

Corporate yoga classes run during the workday, mostly in the lunch break, although it can run right before or after work hours. How will this fit with the work systems of your organization?

Yoga classes run between 45-60 minutes. Employees will need only a few extra minutes to return to their jobs afterwards. The classes are designed in a way so students don’t have to take a shower before returning to their tasks.

Financing the corporate yoga classes:

How will your organization finance the classes? There are many options available depending on if your insurance or/and employees will co-finance the cost of the classes.

You can require employees to pay a small fee per class. Even if they only contribute $2-5, depending on the class size a big chunk of the investment can be covered this way.

Independent yoga studio classes begin at $12 (as part of a package), single yoga class can cost up to $18. Contributing $4-5 to a corporate class is an excellent investment in comparison.

Finding space:

You will need to provide a big enough room for the class. Meeting rooms, company training facilities, conference rooms are good choices usually. An excellent yoga class space has enough space, fresh air, natural light, and a good atmosphere.  Most important is to create a calm environment for practice if possible. Even if the selected room doesn’t have all these attributes, our experts will help you make the best of an available room option.

Can you provide some space for storing yoga mats, props for the yoga instructor and students? This is not necessary but certainly a nice addition.

Yoga group size:

On site yoga classes can take up to 25 participants usually. Even if you have 10 employees, it is still worth to begin with classes as usually more and more people want to take advantage of it as they see the positive impact their colleagues experience.

We don’t recommend having a group of more than 25 students so everybody can get personal attention from the yoga instructor. You have more people interested in participating? Let us prepare a special offer for your organization!

We provide custom solutions for your company and employees. Please call us at 314-630-1677 so we can help you create the perfect on site yoga program for your organization’s special needs.

Do you Live in a Friendly World or a Hostile One?

Have you noticed when you have more energy, you are more inspired and get more done?  You have happier thoughts, are in a better mood and find more creative new ideas?

Albert Einstein once said that whether you live in a friendly or hostile world was the most important question of our time.

I used to look outside and wait for others to be kind.  Guess what?  I was spell casted into believing that someone else would one day bring me my happiness.  As I practiced and taught more yoga, and opened up more about my true feelings of inferiority, I found that more people were drawn to me and inspired by my willingness to be authentic.  I realized that right in the middle of our stressors, it is possible to pause, and come back to my center, to discover the creativity, vitality and wisdom within.

And wow, did I attract lots of business, new clientele and have lots of energy.  No longer content with waiting for other people to change, I wanted to learn the tools to do that myself.  And I discovered many cool things changing in the workplace too!

In 2001, when I began teaching corporate on-site wellness, to be honest, I really did not have much idea about what I was doing except I had faith.  I believed that what I was teaching would one day bring about fantastic results and 10 years later after teaching 2,000 corporate yoga classes and training yoga instructors around the world, I believe that came true.

Since practicing yoga, I am lighter on myself and can even laugh at my own imperfections and weaknesses more somehow, just knowing, that is where the light is.  For example, I am a terrible driver; I just don’t enjoy being behind the wheel and going places, except for the good music that sometimes plays on the radio.  I also am not a very good cook.  Despite many halfhearted attempts, and with a very busy teaching schedule, my cooking over the past ten years has not changed very much.  But all of that is okay.  In fact that leaves lots of room to enjoy and collaborate with the strengths of others.

Enjoy another great corporate yoga video celebrating 10 years of success for St. Louis Corporate Yoga (Clayton Yoga Studio).

With the practice of daily breathing, I have the increased energy, and perspective to go past the daily dramas and labeling and evaluation of everything and just be in a state of gratitude and wonderment.  It is there that I understand how to prioritize better, laugh more and just lighten up!  As I do that I recover my spirit, feel even more energy and thank the sky, the sun, the moon, and these cycles that are teaching us, anyone can do yoga, anyone can experience profound love and anyone can fly!
